Set a year after the first game, this tale unfolds in 1980 Los Angeles in the Cape West Apartments. Three years later, Hotel Dusk: The Secret of Cape West was released. One of my all time favourites, it’s atmospheric, beautiful and each track compliments the respective scene or character well.Īfter the positive reception of Room 215, the developers Cing, put their efforts towards a sequel. I can’t talk about this game without mentioning the soundtrack. It does add to the charm of the game though and if you can look past the slightly aged graphics, you’re rewarded with a game that not only uses the DS in a creative way, but grips you with a compelling story and charm that just can’t be matched by most games on the DS. For the time, the 3D graphics of the Hotel were nothing too spectacular and haven’t aged that well 12 years on. Each character has their distinctive personality which comes off very easily with the animation style. The charming brushstroke style holds up really well. Show them the correct items you’ve found and you’ll uncover the mystery and the information you so desperately need. Throughout the game, you find a backstory on each character and why they are in the Hotel. You’ll also get a game over if you’re caught with an item that isn’t yours or explore a restricted area without permission.

Say the wrong thing while choosing your dialogue and you’ll get a game over. It can feel like a visual novel at times, so I hope you like reading. In some instances, there’s multiple choices of dialogue to choose from. You talk to people in the Hotel to find clues, and meet some interesting characters on your way. Kyle is now a door to door salesman, in a search to find Bradley. The protagonist is called Kyle Hyde, an ex New York City cop looking for his ex partner on the force - Bradley.

Luckily there’s an option for left handed people like myself. Firstly, the game is played with the DS on its side, like a book. The game uses the DS touch screen in some imaginative ways. I won’t go too deep into the story of the game as it’s best experienced yourself - but it involves a crime ring and a mystery to unravel about the Hotel. It takes place in rural Nevada in 1979 in a hotel named - you guessed it - Hotel Dusk. The game uses rotoscoping to animate each character which made it visually compelling and very different from any other game on the market. Most of the box is in black and white which was how the characters are portrayed in the game. Reading the back of the box, I knew I had to buy it. The box caught my eye, as one of the expensive games on the shelf - a sign of a good game in most cases.

I bought the first game in the series - Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - at CEX for around £15 at the time. The DS had a lot of shovelware released during its lifetime but once in a while one game comes along and blows you away with its creativity - Hotel Dusk is one such game. While it seemed like everybody else played either Call of Duty or Battlefield and talked about it at lunchtime, I was the only one happily playing my DS and experiencing some of the best animation and storytelling to ever grace the system.Ĭombining a mixture of puzzles, exploration, mystery and suspense, the two Hotel Dusk games were a breath of fresh air for the system. One of my favourite games when I was in High School was ‘Hotel Dusk: Room 215’ from Cing Software.
